After attending numerous church-based cell groups and experiencing the same old thing over and over again. Come home feeling utterly disconnected, unchallenged, unhappy and unmotivated to go back again. I had an epiphany…”Something must be radically wrong” . Why does it always feel like just another Bible Study, a bunch of arb people who barely know me or even hint at wanting to get real and then sharing their view on what the Bible says. If that was all this cell group thing was about then I’m better off reading commentaries or acquainting myself with some classics. Somehow It had lost the sense of realness, of authentic people with Christ as their passion for relating and with a want to connect on a deeper level, it had lost a sense of fellowship. A bunch of friends recently invited me to a new fellowship group and we asked ourselves the question how do we redefine the dusty cell group model, how do we jazz it up? The elements of Jazz are innovation, reinterpretation and redefining roles; these are what make the jazz culture unique. Well, in our innovation it became apparent to me, that what we wanted to create was actually nothing new, it was merely a rediscovery of an old theology, rediscovering biblical fellowship. Making it evident in our words of encouragement, our sacrificial commitment to spending quality time together, speaking heart to heart, being able to be vulnerable without being judged. We are but a mere band of ragamuffins who seek to experience God together and to share of our encounters with God for the benefit of others. Perhaps more cell groups need to re-evaluate, redefine, and rediscover what they are about.
